Community
Lions Clubs are central and vital in their
local communities. It is the hands-on role in improving the quality of life of
local people which really encapsulates the spirit of being a Lion.
The Lions MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE scheme gives peace of mind to many by
enabling key details concerning health and medication to be immediately
available for use in the home.
Across Great Britain, Lions Clubs work in partnership with and support a wide
range of organisations active in the community.
There is also a growing Lion involvement in environmentally conscious programmes
within local communities.
Here in Selby, members of the local Lions Club in addition to raising funds for
their charities, provide assistance to other local organisations.
Members help Friends of Selby Hospital with Selby War Memorial Hospital's
Annual Gala all proceeds of which are donated to the hospital.
Among our other non-fundraising activities we assist in the annual Christmas
Toy Collection, run by The Selby Times, for children in Selby and the
surrounding area. These toys are distributed by the Salvation Army.
A number of our members assist the Selby Branch of Age Concern. Their
roles vary from driving a minibus, sorting donated items and serving on the
Board of Trustees.
Volunteers also assist Hemingbrough Luncheon Club with the serving of
their Christmas lunch.
